Vintage J.R. Watkins Co. Amber Glass Bottle – Owens-Illinois – Circa 1930s
A beautiful piece of American advertising history, this vintage amber glass bottle was produced for The J.R. Watkins Co., a company with roots dating back to 1868.
The bottle features a rich, deep amber color and a bold embossed front panel reading “THE J.R. WATKINS CO.” One side displays a distinctive series of circular recessed panels, giving the bottle an unusual and instantly recognizable profile.
The base bears an Owens-Illinois Glass Company maker’s mark along with production codes. Based on the mark and visible code configuration, the bottle is consistent with 1930s production and is believed to date to approximately 1937.
J.R. Watkins became a familiar name in American households through its extracts, spices, remedies, and household products. Watkins dealers famously traveled directly to homes, making the company’s products and distinctive bottles part of everyday American life.
Amber glass was commonly used for products that benefited from protection from light, giving these bottles their recognizable warm brown coloring. Today, original embossed Watkins bottles are collected for their advertising history, decorative appeal, and connection to early American household products.
