Antique French “Bonne Année” Postcard – Child with Mistletoe | Dated 1913
A charming authentic French New Year postcard featuring a young child carrying two generous branches of mistletoe. The softly tinted photographic image highlights the child’s pale pink cardigan, knitted bonnet and pink shoes against a beautifully blurred outdoor setting.
“Bonne Année,” meaning “Happy New Year,” appears across the top in ornate raised lettering with metallic-gilt accents. The front bears the “Mignon” mark, which is also embossed along the reverse.
The handwritten message is dated December 31, 1913, and reads in translation:
“On the occasion of the New Year, little Georges joins us in wishing you a good and happy year. Dear Uncle and dear Aunt, receive an embrace from the three of us.”
The card is signed by Jean-Marie, Georges and Berthe.
Mistletoe was traditionally associated with good fortune, prosperity and affection during French New Year celebrations, making this an especially meaningful piece of seasonal ephemera.
