A wonderful example of mid-century Japanese decorative ceramics, this handsome Ruffed Grouse planter/figurine was produced for INARCO (International Art Ware Corporation) and made in Japan.
The underside is particularly important: it retains the INARCO marking, handwritten “Ruffed Grouse,” model number C-6391, and original Made in Japan foil label.
The grouse is beautifully modeled with an impressive fanned tail, deeply sculpted feathering and a rich metallic finish ranging from warm antique gold and amber to bronze and brown. The integrated opening along the bird’s back reveals its original function as a small planter, although today it makes a striking decorative object displayed on its own.
An Uncommon Find
What makes this particular piece especially interesting is its lack of representation in the current secondary market.
Extensive searches for the exact INARCO Ruffed Grouse C-6391 have produced very few relevant results, and I have been unable to locate a reliable sold-price record for another clearly identified C-6391.
That does not necessarily establish the piece as rare, but it does suggest that this particular INARCO model is considerably less frequently encountered online than the company’s more common bird and novelty planters. There are currently thousands of INARCO pieces represented in the marketplace, while this exact model remains elusive.
