Vintage 1969 Hand-Finished Dutch Speculaas Cookie Molds – Large 20½” Man & Woman

A wonderful piece of European baking tradition that has become equally beautiful as folk art.
This striking matched pair of vintage Speculaas cookie molds dates to 1969 and features a gentleman and lady rendered in traditional European dress. Each elongated wooden panel measures approximately 20½ inches tall, giving the pair an impressive presence when displayed together.
The deeply dimensional figures, aged dark finish and warm golden-brown patina give these pieces the wonderful character that only comes with time. Look closely and you’ll find charming details throughout—from the gentleman’s tall hat and buttoned coat to the lady’s elaborate headdress, jewelry and beautifully patterned dress.
The reverse retains its aged, hand-worked appearance, and one is visibly marked “Hand Finished 1969.” Both pieces have hanging hardware, making them ready to display.
Speculaas molds have a long European tradition and were used to form highly decorated spiced cookies, particularly in Dutch and neighboring European baking traditions. Vintage examples are now collected not only as kitchenware but as European folk art and decorative wall pieces. A 1960s Dutch speculaas example is likewise described as both a functional cookie mold and something intended to hang as kitchen décor. 
What makes this pair especially appealing is the large scale and complementary man-and-woman subjects. Hung side by side, they would be fabulous in a European country kitchen, French or English-inspired interior, old-world pantry, dining room or collected gallery wall.
