Antique French Festonneur Embroidery Pattern Transfer Collect

A remarkable surviving collection from the history of French needlework and embroidery, sourced in France and preserved together as found.
Dating to approximately c. 1900–1930, these fascinating tools are known as festonneurs—hand-operated pattern-transfer rollers once used to prepare fabric for hand embroidery.
Before a decorative border or motif could be stitched, the design first needed to be placed onto the fabric. A festonneur allowed the embroiderer to roll a continuous pattern onto linen or other cloth using ink. The raised designs on the interchangeable cylinders produced floral, foliate, scalloped and geometric outlines that could then be followed with needle and thread.
An Exceptional Group
This collection is especially appealing because it preserves two different festonneur mechanisms together with multiple interchangeable patterned rollers and period accessories rather than a single isolated tool.
Included are two handled festonneur mechanisms; approximately six interchangeable decorative pattern cylinders/rollers; a period fitted storage box; period dark glass ink bottle with cork; small brush/accessory; and a small spring-wire tool or clip that was found with the collection.
Several of the rollers and inking components retain traces of old blue and reddish pigment, wonderful evidence of their actual working life. I have intentionally left these historic remnants untouched.
One of the festonneur mechanisms is marked “DÉPOSÉE,” a French term indicating a registered design or model, and bears an unidentified pictorial trademark.
Why This Collection Is Special
Festonneurs are an intriguing but little-known part of textile history. Individual rollers and tools have survived, but a group containing multiple patterned cylinders, two different mechanisms, period ink, brush, fitted box and associated small accessory provides a much fuller picture of how these devices were used.
Period French catalogues document festonneur outfits being offered with interchangeable pattern rollers, embroidery ink and brushes. A comparable festonneur ensemble preserved in the collection of Palais Galliera / Paris Musées is dated to the first quarter of the 20th century.
For that reason, I have chosen not to separate this collection. After approximately a century, these pieces tell a much better story together.
Condition
Authentic antique condition with wear consistent with age and historical use. Expect patina, oxidation, surface wear and surviving pigment/ink. The period storage box shows considerable age and wear.
The small spring-wire piece was found with the collection. Its exact original purpose has not been established, so it is included and preserved with the group rather than being represented as a confirmed festonneur component.
The collection has not been restored or aggressively cleaned. These are being offered as collectible historic textile tools rather than guaranteed functional equipment.
